Barcelona, 1960. He studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Barcelona (1977-1984). He completed the residency programme at Vall d’Hebron Hospital, and later a clinical fellowship in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at Emory University, Atlanta (1989). He was a surgical consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology at Vall d’Hebron Hospital until 1999. Dr. José L. Güell specializes in corneal transplant surgery, refractive surgery, and anterior segment reconstruction.
He is a professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Master’s Degree at the Institute of Ocular Microsurgery) and coordinates the Department of Cornea and Refractive Surgery at IMO Miranza in Barcelona. He has been president of the ESCRS and EuCornea, and is still a member of the board of the two societies. He also coordinates the anterior segment modules at ESASO (European School of Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology) and is currently a board member of the Cornea Society in the USA.
His areas of interest are lamellar and endothelial keratoplasty, complex cataract surgery, anterior segment reconstructive procedures including keratoprosthesis, refractive surgery, especially excimer and femtosecond, and the implantation of phakic intraocular lenses and intrastromal rings.
He has given more than 700 lectures and talks at national and international meetings and has published nearly 250 articles in scientific journals and several book chapters.
